Pinch Me! Xperia X10 Gets Pinch/Zoom Update

| February 2, 2011 | Comments (7)

Straight from the Sony Ericsson product blog page comes the announcement many Xperia X10 owners have been waiting for. Pinch/Zoom is officially coming to your Android! According to the post by Sony Ericsson, the Xperia X10 will get the coveted Pinch/Zoom feature along with optimizations, bugfixes, and language additions including Arabic, Farsi, Thai, and Hebrew.

In a blog post from November of last year, Sony expressed their plans and concerns about bringing multi-touch/pinch-zoom to the X10. Having finally made the update a reality, the only question now is how can you get it? According to the blog, the OTA (over the air) update has started rolling out and should hit your device any day now. If you’re not willing to wait for the OTA, the update can also be done using the PC companion software.

If you have an X10, let us know what you think of the update. Was it worth it? And on a sad note, if you haven’t heard already, Sony Ericsson has officially stated that the X10 will NOT receive the Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) update, saying:

“We believe that the current Xperia range on Android 2.1 coupled with Sony Ericsson’s proprietary upgrades and unique hardware delivers a user experience that is on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of Android 2.2.”

I guess Gingerbread is out of the question.

  1. Sony Sucks says:

Yea theyd rather screw the people who helped them launch their droid line and focus on the arc and other phones…

  2. Luis Sc says:

Wth? Didn't they say that the Multitouch nerf for the device was not a software issue but more like the device had NO multitouch HARDWARE? Is there any more info about how this will work? And are there any end-users already that can review the update?

Yes, Richard Skogberg said exactly that on their official blog almost a year ago. http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/2010/03/26….

That was reiterated by Harold de Cort, SE Communications manager, in late April.

But let's talk about the update that supposedly was incompatible with the hardware. Evidently there's some problems for AT&T users of the X10, as multitouch can't be enabled until a previous OS 2.1 update goes out and they're having trouble with it. The trouble isn't mentioned, just acknowledged on the SE product blog. So while SE announced the rollout, they didn't specify which countries are getting it or when.
