Gameloft Goes Exclusive, Says Amazons App Store Is The One

| March 26, 2011 | Comments (5)

Hands up if you hate Gamelofts current method of distributing its 3D games to Android. Yeah it sucks, but wait! Because its about to suck a little less.

Mobile Gaming Giants

Gameloft, better known because of their iPhone titles such as N.O.V.A and Asphalt, have announced that they will exclusively be selling their games for Android through Amazons App Store. The main reason for joining Amazons new venture is because, like Google, they can give the company a huge platform and a base from which to expand further. It is no secret that Gameloft are making lots of money from the iPhone last year announcing revenues of $141 million (up 16% from the year before), the next logical step is to move onto Android where more money and revenue opportunities await.

Wheres The Android Love?

Why not use Android Market though? According to Gameloft Chief Executive Michel Guillemot “The Amazon ecosystem is controlled where we don’t find too many pirated version of our games or malware games, so for the consumers, it will be a safer place to come and get applications,” A strange thing to say about a market still finding its feet and barely a week old.

Maybe Amazon struck a deal with Gameloft similar to the deal that got Rovio to make Angry Birds: Rio exclusive to the App Store? Maybe Amazon promised special treatment. Gaming is a huge source of revenue in an app market and scoring Gameloft is a big boost for Amazon.

For non-US Android gamers this is bad news… as Amazon currently is not available to European customers for example :-(

Well, for us in the Philippines, this doesn't matter as the Android Market or Amazon App Store don't sell apps here. I can very easily buy PC games from Steam or even Amazon itself, so this is really annoying. I like Android but the Apple App Store is way ahead in this area.
