When looking for a deal one never has to go very far. We get the Daily Steals email alerts as soon as the next deals of the day are active. Not always are they ones we will post up here and share, but usually you will find them hitting our G+ page. Todays deal however, was to good to not make an announcement about. Daily Steals is offering up not one, but two different Motorola XOOM tablets today.

The first is a 32GB WiFi + 3G GSM unlocked Motorola XOOM. It gives you the ability to toss in your SIM card that already has a data plan and utilize the service on your tablet. Alternatively …

See the big green box in the chart above? That represents the Samsung Galaxy S II, which makes up about 10% of all the devices. Also, Samsung as a whole makes up 40% of all the devices. Strong showing, Sammy.

Some of us think of this as an advantage… choice, after all, is a good thing…

After finding out yesterday about the “ridiculousness”of Apple’s patent infringement suit on HTC, delaying the HTC Evo 4G LTE and new HTC One X phones from entering the country; a lot of us stared at our computer screens with rage in our eyes and rage in our hearts.
Cheezia: Gears of Fur is an engaging and fun platform game with some very cool physics elements thrown in. Your job is to help Manu, a mouse housed within a wall-climbing cogwheel of some kind, save some important recipes from the grip of an Evil Kiwinel bird. So, this adventure is all about food, then: cheese, mainly.

If you like dairy, and also like your games Mario-esque and dripping in cheese, this is the game you’ve been waiting for. Grab a cracker or some nachos and read on for more…

Intro and Controls
You control Manu who sits inside a cogwheel usin…

Sprint has finally addressed the whole HTC EVO 4G LTE delay debacle today on their forum page. it simply confirms that YES it is stuck in US customs. Pre-ordered phones are put on hold, and the author of the post said that the pre-ordered phones will still arrive first. Question is, when? Friday was supposed to be the release of the phone and it is not looking good for that at all. Here is what was said:

HTC EVO 4G LTE availability
The U.S. availability of the HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed. HTC is working to resolve this issue and appreciates your patie

So, yesterday, we learned that the AT&T HTC One X and Sprint’s upcoming HTC EVO 4G LTE had been delayed in the US due to Apple’s how-the-hell-did-it-get-granted link patent. Patent #5,946,647 deals with the now standard Android method of clicking a link (like in email) and being presented with a menu displaying a list of apps you want to launch from there. We posted earlier about LG’s new UI 3.0 experience, and we all probably have a differences about it. Lot of us would just love for these OEM’s to leave what Android has created alone, but we know that will never happen. people like options, and options are what you get with Android. LG’s new bad boy the Optimus 4X HD got a spiffy little commercial that dropped on the net today. In true “Tron-like” fashion, we see the phone’s features and not much more than what we already know. Looks pretty ‘shanzzy’ though, and you just got to wonder if…

It looks like Google is listening to its users and are working on finding a better solution to the 4-per-year device deauthorization limit that was previously set on Google Music. Earlier today, news broke out that Google was limiting the number of devices that could be deauthorized to a maximum of 4 per year, leaving many who habitually flash new ROMS on their devices SOL.

For now, Google has removed the 4-device per year deauthorization limit. The limit, which was implemented yesterday, was done at the request of some of the Google Music partners. We’re not sure what Google …

The iPhone may be Japan’s most popular smartphone, and NTT Docomo may be the nation’s biggest carrier, but what would seem like a match made in heaven is unlikely to come to pass any time soon. That’s the takeaway from comments made by Docomo president Ryuji Yamada yesterday, who expressed preference for Android devices due to their open nature. At yesterday’s event announcing the company’s summer lineup, Yamada told a crowd of reporters that it would be ‘difficult’ for Docomo to provide the same experience to iPhone customers because of Apple’s strict regulations. The number two and three carriers in Japan, au / KDDI and SoftBank, both sell the iPhone in addition to Android devic…

Couple weeks ago, I wrote up a post with a download to INVERT your Instagram app and many of you clicked in to see what it was all about. I really liked the more blacked out theme because, to me, the regular Instagram app looks to much like that silly OS that is named after a fruit. It was a bit of a relief to see our amazing developers invert the color and get rid of that silly theme.

Well the developers are at it again, and you just knew that this was coming. An ICS themed Instagram turning that much-loved picture social app, into the Holo Theme that we have all come to love…

If you’re one of the many people who have been riding the unlimited data train on Verizon’s network, the ride might be coming to an end for some of you. The big change is going to be taking place sometime mid-summer when Verizon Wireless launches its tiered data share plans.

During an investors conference this morning, Executive Vice President and CFO Fran Shammo announced the news when he said the following:
<br…

We just wrapped up a launch event for the LG Optimus LTE 2 here in Korea, and there’s little doubt that it’s LG’s flagship play. The center of attention is definitely the screen: the phone boasts a 720p, 4.7-inch IPS display that looks pretty great to our eyes. Beyond the screen, the most notable spec is probably the 2GB of RAM LG has thrown in to power both Android 4.0 and LG’s new “Optimus UI 3.0″ skin. Presumably that much RAM means the phone won’t need to make any multitasking compromises, but as LG tells us, “In the Korean market, 1GB of RAM is not enough for LTE phones.” The processor is just what we suspected, a Qualcomm S4 MSM8960 clocked at 1.5GHz, though LG claims that i…

I’ve always been a sucker for a good UI, and despite the bad press surrounding the Grid 10 tablet, I must say, I kinda had a “thing” for their unconventional homescreen. As it stands, Android’s tablet UI isn’t very much to look at. Essentially, you have a larger smartphone home screen which, I understand, is fine for some. But in the spirit of Android and the wonderful options she provides, a new home screen replacement is looking to make Android beautiful again, with the Kickstarter funded Chameleon launcher.

Chameleon is a home screen replacement only for Android tablets and features big and beautiful full f…

NTT Docomo has confirmed to us that its variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III will have 2GB of RAM. The number one Japanese carrier’s model, named the SC-06D, will also feature a 1.5Ghz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor instead of Samsung’s quad-core Exynos, presumably because of its compatibility with Docomo’s Xi LTE network. We’ve already heard that LTE variants of the phone in the US will use a dual-core processor, but it’s important to note that Docomo’s model is a separate version – it has other features specific to the local market such as a 1seg TV tuner, so the expanded RAM may well remain exclusive to Japan. Still, with LG’s Optimus LTE 2 featuring the same amount of memory…

Check out this unboxing video of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III. As you probably know by now, the upcoming Galaxy S III is getting ready to be released in Europe at the end of the month; it was only a matter of time before unboxing videos started to creep on Youtube. The latest video comes from Nicollo Rolli, editor in chief of the Italian-based HD Network. In the video, the Galaxy S III is compared to the Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Nexus, HTC One S, and the powerful HTC One X. Unfortunately, the entire video is in Italian, so if you don’t speak Italian, you’ll be able to enj…

Back at CES in January Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt took part in CNET’s Next Big Thing Panel, where he famously said this when discussing Android fragmentation:

“You have to be careful with that word,” he cautioned. He actually prefers to use the term “differentiation” to describe the situation, as his definition of fragmentation is when certain apps are able to run on one particular flavor of Android and not other. “What people really care about is if there’s an interoperable ecosystem of apps.”

Eric Schmidt: Android Is Differentiated, Not Fragmented

I’ll admit that I’m less alarmed about Android fragmentation than it seems because it doesn’t touch my life very often. The apps that I want to use are, with only a few exceptions available for my phone and my tablets, and they work quite well. Even though I don’t endure fragmentation ugliness very often, I’ve never bought the notion that fragmentation isn’t an issue for Android. It’s just not as much of an issue as some want you to believe that it is.

There are too many devices from too many manufacturers to not see it as a problem at some level. Just in the USA there are multiple phones from HTC, Motorola, Samsung, ZTE, Huawei, LG and others that are available on every carrier. What’s worse, there are multiple variants of some of these devices based on carrier. The HTC One X that might land on AT&T isn’t physically the same HTC One X that you’ll be able to buy in Canada because the Tegra 3 quad core processor isn’t compatible with LTE.

Most of these types of fragmentation issues are easily ignorable from the end user point of view. If you’re an average phone buyer on the AT&T network and you buy the HTC One X, the dual core Snapdragon processor isn’t going to be front and center on your mind. You’ll care about how the phone looks, how responsive it is when you pick it up and how the phone feels in your hand.

Not really much of an issue. Or is it?

Android app developer OpenSignalMaps collects cellular and WiFi signal data to map networks and present information to assist people with finding the best network in their area. Simple concept, simple app.

OSM has been collecting data from 195 countries about the devices that download their app. They logged device, manufacturer and OS versions for 6 months, and the results were stunning. There were 3,997 different devices from 599 distinct manufacturers.

Folks jumped all over this report as a sign that fragmentation is a huge Android problem, but it doesn’t seem that many people actually read the entire blog post from OpenSignalMaps. At the very end of their post, OSM says that:

One of the joys of developing for Android is you have no idea who’ll end up using your app.

That sounds like a bunch of hippie crap to me, but that’s not the point that many seem to be missing. In the description for the models section of their report, OSM says this (emphasis mine):

One complication is that custom ROMs can overwrite the android.build.MODEL variable that we use for the device model. This partly explains why a staggering 1363 device models appear only once in our database.

In the rush to proclaim that there are over 3,900 different Android devices, all three stories that I read about this report failed to mention the fact that 1,363 of those phones were unique models. Due to rooting and custom ROM usage just over 1/3 of the devices in this report identified as unique devices when in fact they were not. The maximum number of unique devices in this report is actually 2,634, and we don’t know what other variables are at play that might lower that number even further.

Look, fragmentation or differentiation exists in the Android world, that’s just a fact. Want to know another fact? Unless you’re buying an off-brand, no-name Chinese device running a hacked up version of Android you’ll have very few issues with all of the differentiation.

Sure, you’ll have some app issues from time to time, but that would happen if there were only 12 models of Android devices. Fragmentation isn’t your enemy, as bad as it may seem on the surface, fragmentation provides the choice that you have in devices and carriers. Differentiation is actually your friend.

If you’re a Sprint customer, you can now pay for all of your Google Play store purchases with carrier billing. Previously, this option was only available for apps, but today, Google announced that carrier billing for Sprint customers was now available for books, movies, music, and apps.

While some might not think carrier billing is a big deal, for many, this is great news. Some people don’t have credit cards; some don’t like having multiple charges for $.99 show up on their statements; some simply don’t like to use their credit cards online. With carrier billing, you pay for …

If you’re a Google Music user who likes to flash custom ROMS on your Android device, you might want to be careful the next time you deauthorize a device from your Google Music account. According to new reports, Google now only allows a maximum of 4 devices to be deauthorized each year. Some users on XDA Developers have recently started to complain about no longer being able to deauthorize devices. According to one user, the new rule by Google must’ve been implemented within the last 60 days because this was not a problem back then.

For the average user, this won’t be a problem…

The Android world was somewhat up in arms today after discovering new limitations on Google Play Music, namely that you could only de-authorize up to four devices every year. This put those who often flash new phone or tablet ROMs in a bind, since an active flasher could run through his or her quota in a couple of months. The small but extremely vocal portion of Android users that this affects made their opinions known, and Google seems to have removed the limitation for the moment.

A few hours after changing the limit on Google Music itself, this message appeared on the Google Play support page:

Yesterday we made a change to our device policy for music

Normally that wouldn’t be considered very important news to you guys, but get this – NT Docomo is listing their GS3 with the same dual-core S4 processor that’s been leaked to arrive in the US and, get this – it will supposedly arrive with 2GB of RAM.

Now, this could be nothing more than a typo from a carrier with more high-end Android devices in their lineup than they know what to do with. But it got me thinking… If Samsung does opt for a slightly less powerful Qualcomm S4 processor for …

Let’s get this right out of the way: Verizon’s latest release for the LG Revolution is not, repeat not, Ice Cream Sandwich. There, we’re done. That being said, there’s quite a bit of new stuff in the latest update, and Revolution owners who are still on the stock software will want to upgrade immediately. Build VS910zV9 brings some important security fixes along with the usual speed and stability improvements.

According to Verizon’s documentation, unspecified “Android security patches” have been put in place, along with fixes to MMS when connected to WiFi, a more stable dialer app and squashing some multiple SMS bugs. Other additio…

Last night and most of the day today the blogosphere was all the rage over Google Music and Google’s supposed changes to Google Music’s authorized device policy. The official authorized device limit on Google Music gives you an ample 10 devices. This includes phones, tablets, and computers. Google tracks devices by identifiers such as your computer’s MAC address or mobile identifiers such as IMEI or MEID numbers.

It was reported over and over again that Google was now limiting the number of devices that can be deauthorized from your Google Music account. The change that was noticed last night and earlier today allowed for a maximum of 4 devices to be removed or deauthorized from your account per year.

To the average user, this is a moot point giving you a total of 14 authorized devices to use Google Music with over the course of a year. However, to the crack ROM flasher and phone reviewer, this change had people worried. Every time you flash a new ROM onto your tablet or phone, a duplicate device is added to Google Music upon reauthorizing your device. If you’re one of the many Android device reviewers in the world, this news was upsetting as well. Device reviewers are constantly adding and removing devices to their accounts for testing purposes.

This all started last night when this thread popped up on an XDA forum. Users were reporting problems removing devices from Google Music. Immediately, without contacting Play Store Support, this news spread like wildfire. Conclusions were immediately drawn that Google was turning their backs on the root community and cracking down in similar fashion as to Google Movies and root in the past.

Let’s step back and take a look at this for a moment. Google actively supports the AOSP community. It’s everywhere from groups to factory images. They support us. Google has also recently spent an extremely large amount of money rebranding and revamping their ecosystem to Google Play. It has also been rumored that Google is not happy with the success or lack thereof with Play Music and are rumored to be offering recording firms upwards of one billion dollars for their entire music catalog. With that type of investment, you don’t ignore a large portion of your user base and community. It’s borderline insane to think that root users and device reviewers would be shut out from one of Google’s latest ventures.

This morning some users started to report that they actually attempted to fact check before grabbing their pitchforks. They contacted Google via their new Play Store Support line. The support representatives were extremely helpful. They informed users that they would remove the devices in question from their account and reset their deauthorization number back to zero. The support reps also told customers that this was a known issue and a solution was in the works.

In the end, this entire fiasco could have been avoided if a little fact checking was done. At the time of this writing, numerous users from around the web are reporting that they can now remove and deauthorize unwanted devices once again. Thanks Google for actively resolving this issue to appease the masses. If you’re having problems still, please contact Google Play Support. Good luck!

Mobile marketing continues to grow in importance for advertisers, and as such Nielsen’s made mobile usage statistics a major part of its data reporting. Its latest report focuses on how consumers use apps on their smartphones, and amid some relatively unsurprising statistics (the number of iOS and Android users in the US more than doubled in the last year, from 38 million to 84 million, for example) was a note on the top five apps smartphone owners use. Somewhat surprisingly, the top apps were Facebook, YouTube, Android Market, Google Search, and Gmail – the same as Nielsen saw last year. While Facebook and YouTube aren’t terribly surprising, the other three apps are rather unexpe…

There’s a ton of launchers available at the moment, but depressingly few are for Android tablets (with Go Launcher HD being the best among them). Chameleon is a new tablet launcher that uses an impressive methodology: its layout changes depending upon the time of day, connection, or even GPS location, catering itself to which apps you use in which situations. Like seemingly everybody these days, the creators have started a Kickstarter campaign to get Chameleon finished and into the Google Play Store.

Why do they need a whopping $50,000? They aren’t saying, but they are giving a pretty compelling reason to donate: give them $5 or more, and they’ll let you ha…
